Finding Free Plants: Wild Blueberries in North East Florida

We've been trying to grow blueberries at the house for years with very little luck. We recently replanted our commercially purchased blueberry bushes beneath our elderberries, where water likes to puddle up, and the blueberries are now looking better, but we only have a few blueberries on the bushes this year.

So, imagine our surprise, when we discovered that we have our very own wild blueberry bushes at The Land here in North East Florida.

Yes, it's true, we've got one 4 ft tall highbush blueberry bush, one 6 ft tall blueberry bush and another small one coming. The blueberries are tiny, not large like the commercial kind of blueberries, and they don't all ripen at once, so we get a few every time we're at The Land, and then of course we share with the wildlife.

We think that we finally noticed them this year, because we've had standing water througout the spring, which means that the deer didn't get the berries before they ripened.

It's actually quite funny, because the wild blueberry bush that is most prolific is growing in the shade beneath a pine tree.

Have you ever tried wild blueberries?
